A clean and well-lubricated chain is the heart of a smooth motorcycle ride. Neglected chains wear faster, reduce fuel efficiency, and can even be dangerous. This guide shows you simple, step-by-step methods to clean, inspect, and lubricate your motorcycle chain correctly — using tools you likely already have at home or in your garage.

🧰 Tools & Materials Needed

  • Motorcycle stand or center-stand (bike must be stable)
  • Brush (toothbrush or dedicated chain brush)
  • Chain cleaner / degreaser (or kerosene for older bikes)
  • Clean rags or microfiber cloths
  • Chain lubricant (spray lube or wax-based lube recommended)
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • Torque wrench (if you'll adjust or tighten wheel bolts)

⚙️ Step 1 — Prepare the Bike

Put the bike on its center-stand or paddock stand so the rear wheel can spin freely. Shift the gearbox to neutral. Clean the surrounding area to avoid dirt entering the sprockets while you work.

Spray the chain cleaner or apply kerosene with a brush. Let it soak for 1–2 minutes (not too long). Scrub all sides of the chain — rollers, plates, and O-ring seals (if present). Rotate the wheel slowly and keep brushing until most grime and old lube are removed.
