Ambulance AC System Repair – Complete Cooling Guide

Introduction

Hello friends, welcome to Rajesh Technical Blog.
Today I will tell you about Ambulance AC System Repair – Complete Cooling Guide, where I will explain how to check the compressor, condenser, cooling fan, AC relay, wiring, thermostat, and gas pressure of an ambulance AC system step-by-step.

Ambulance AC is very different from a normal car AC because it needs fast cooling, long running stability, and continuous performance even in emergency situations.
That's why proper AC maintenance is extremely important.

1. Main Components of an Ambulance AC System

Before repairing, understand the key parts:

  • AC Compressor
  • Condenser
  • Cooling Fan
  • AC Relay & Fuse
  • AC Switch & Wiring
  • Thermostat Sensor
  • Blower Motor
  • Expansion Valve
  • AC Gas (Refrigerant)
  • Cabin Cooling Ducts

Ambulance AC works under heavy load, so each part must be in perfect condition.

2. AC Not Cooling? Start With Basic Checking

If ambulance AC is not cooling, check these first:

✔ Fuse

If AC fuse is blown → AC will not start.

✔ Relay

Faulty relay = compressor not engaging.

✔ AC Switch

Loose switch wiring = no compressor signal.

✔ Blower Motor

If blower is weak → cabin cooling reduces instantly.

3. Compressor Checking

Compressor is the heart of AC.

How to Test?

  • Start engine
  • Turn AC ON
  • Check if compressor clutch is engaging
  • If not engaging → relay or wire problem
  • If engaging but cooling low → gas or compressor issue

Common Problems

❌ Clutch not engaging
❌ Compressor jam
❌ Low gas pressure
❌ Burning smell

Solution

  • Replace clutch plate
  • Repair or replace compressor
  • Always use proper PAG oil

4. Condenser & Cooling Fan Checking

Ambulance condenser becomes hot very fast because AC runs continuously.

Check Condenser:

  • Dust
  • Mud
  • Blockage
  • Bent fins

Check Cooling Fan:

If fan is slow or not working → AC will not cool.

Fixes:

  • Clean condenser properly
  • Check fan relay
  • Check fan motor
  • Tighten fan ground wire

5. AC Gas Pressure Checking

Ambulance AC needs correct refrigerant pressure.

Low Gas Symptoms

  • Cooling slow
  • Compressor overheating
  • High pressure pipe cold
  • Low pressure pipe warm

High Gas Symptoms

  • Compressor load
  • Pipes too hot
  • Cooling extremely low

Correct Pressure Range

  • Low Side: 30–40 psi
  • High Side: 150–200 psi

(Depends on model and temperature)

6. Thermostat Sensor Checking

Ambulance thermostat controls cooling temperature.

If thermostat is faulty:

  • AC cuts early
  • Blower runs but no cooling
  • Cooling stops after few minutes

Fix:

  • Replace thermostat sensor
  • Check sensor wiring
  • Clean evaporator coil

7. Blower Motor & Cabin Duct Checking

If blower is weak → AC cooling becomes almost zero.

Check:

  • Blower speed
  • Dust in the cabin duct
  • Loose blower wire
  • Faulty blower resistor

Clean the ducts because ambulance runs in dust & heavy roads.

8. AC Wiring & Relay Circuit

Ambulance wiring is heavy, but vibration causes loose connections.

Important wires to check:

  • Compressor clutch wire
  • Relay signal wire
  • Blower wire
  • Thermostat wire
  • Ground wire

A single loose ground wire can stop the whole AC.

9. Emergency Cooling Boost Tips

Ambulance cooling must be fast and stable, especially during emergency.

Quick Cooling Boost:

These tips make cooling 30–40% better.
